Tough decision to make? Ask yourselves.

Don The Idea Guy

Need help making a tough decision?
Will the choice you make impact your career… your family?
Then the best person to ask is yourself, or rather — yourselves.

The decisions we make and the choices we take are a little bit about who we are right now, and a whole lot about who we were in the past and who we want to become in the future. So if you need help selecting a path to take, call upon those two versions of yourself and see how they feel about your/their options.

The You of the Past

The Past version of you is more naive than you remember. A lot of your choices back then were visceral. You were likely headstrong and allowed emotions to rule the decisions you made. Looking back, you might regret some of the things you did (perhaps are even a little embarrassed by them) and if you were allowed to go back and do it all over again you might not make the same choices.

When you consult the You of the past on a decision you need to make in the present, you may be looking for confirmation that the younger you would not make a certain choice due to their immaturity and life experience. A wise decision might be to do the opposite of what past you might have done.

The You of the Future

Picture future you in your mind. Are they happy with where you ended up in life, or were they expecting more? If you like your vision of future you, all you need to do is make the choices that get you closer to that end result. If you don’t like what you see, make choices that put you on a wiser path.

The future you changes a little bit everyday based on the choices you make — for better or for worse.

The Ugly Back

Everyone goes to the museum to admire the pretty fronts of artistic tapestries, but the ugly backs face the wall and are rarely on display. My wife decided she wanted to host a big family Thanksgiving this year. While we were in the process of cleaning up the house and putting our (my) clutter. Hapy […]

My Three Words for 2022

Several years ago I started choosing an annual trio of words to help me stay on track with my goals, focus my actions, and guide my decision making. I copied the practice from Chris Brogan and you can click on that link in his name to visit Chris’ page to read about how he chooses […]

Ideas, Insight

Want hot ideas? Let the tap run.

I’ve written in the past about how I come up with some many good ideas (spoiler alert: it’s because I also come up with so many bad ideas). I’ve also shared how important it is to throw away the first dozen or so ideas you come up with because they’re not going to be especially […]
