strut your stuff

Strut Your Stuff

Don The Idea Guy

One of the most common questions out there from anyone who sells a product or a service: “How do I get known? How will people find me when they need what I sell?” The short answer: strut your stuff (the stuff you want to be known for) in public where people can you see you and what you do.

When a male peacock wants to attract a mate, he fans out that beautiful tail with striking colors and struts his stuff in front of available prospects

The females see the bright colors, thick plumage, and recognize all the signs of a healthy candidate to canoodle with. Your clients and prospects will notice similar things about you — if you’re willing to show off and strut around a bit.

I’m not saying to brag about your work or to puff out your chest with a bunch of hot air.

In the context of this article, strutting your stuff simply means to show your work in public. Conduct yourself as if you’re doing a live demonstration in front of a crowd of potential clients.

If you want customers to hire you for your copywriting skills, you need to be out there writing! Publish short stories, or rewrite sales brochures, or produce a series of email templates, or do a public critique and rewrite of sales proposals.

If you want to be a marketing consultant, do weekly live video advice on Facebook or YouTube. Publicly post ideas for the local advertiser you heard on the radio to get better results from their ads.

If you want to be a travel planner, share insider secrets for getting the most value out of a plane ticket or how to get the best service at hotels or score insider access to tourist attractions.

Strut your stuff and put your valuable skills on public display

To get business, you need to get noticed.
Demonstrating your skills in full view of the world allows the world to see you in action. They can say “hey, that person has some pretty good ideas about how I can stay at a great hotel for a discounted price — I wonder what else they know that could make my next vacation more enjoyable?”

Strut yourself to sell your stuff.

The Ugly Back

Everyone goes to the museum to admire the pretty fronts of artistic tapestries, but the ugly backs face the wall and are rarely on display. My wife decided she wanted to host a big family Thanksgiving this year. While we were in the process of cleaning up the house and putting our (my) clutter. Hapy […]

My Three Words for 2022

Several years ago I started choosing an annual trio of words to help me stay on track with my goals, focus my actions, and guide my decision making. I copied the practice from Chris Brogan and you can click on that link in his name to visit Chris’ page to read about how he chooses […]

Ideas, Insight

Want hot ideas? Let the tap run.

I’ve written in the past about how I come up with some many good ideas (spoiler alert: it’s because I also come up with so many bad ideas). I’ve also shared how important it is to throw away the first dozen or so ideas you come up with because they’re not going to be especially […]
